UK HOSDB-2017 Police Bulletproof Vest Standard

The UK Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB) introduced the initial standard for police bulletproof vests in 1993. Following over two decades of continuous updates and enhancements, the latest bulletproof vest standard was established in 2017.

Bulletproof Vest Protection Levels

The HOSDB-2017 standard categorizes bulletproof vests into four primary levels: HO1 through HO4, with an additional special level for shotgun protection, SG1.
The HO1 and HO2 levels are specifically engineered to shield against pistol projectiles. Although both levels are designed to protect against the same type of bullets, they differ in terms of bullet velocity.
The HO3 and HO4 levels offer resistance against rifle projectiles, including new tests in the HO3 standard for AK47-fired M43 projectiles (7.62 * 39 mm).

Advanced Protection and Special Levels

The highest protection level, HO4, is tested with the 7.62 * 51 mm .308Win 480A POWERHEAD bullet, produced by SAKO. This bullet, constructed entirely from copper, features a distinctive open tip and a plastic wind cap that enhances bullet expansion upon impact.

Additionally, the special levels include the .357 Magnum and SS109 projectiles, which are not utilized by the British police and are therefore categorized separately.
